Ending Religion (Part 1)

Why should a person concern themselves with a religion in the first place? To answer this I will first list the three main reasons people practice religion and or believe in a god/higher power.
• To explain things that is difficult to explain, understand, and or accept.
• For self comfort and as a coping mechanism.
• To establish a concept of an afterlife so that death will not be the end.
You probably have noticed that all three main reasons are tied together and are pretty much the same. People tend to want answers even for things that may not be able to be explained at the time, i.e., how did the universe begin in the first place? To explain this unknown people tend to plug in the god factor. The reason is simple. If something is unknown then this becomes difficult to understand and makes people feel uncomfortable. In order to solve this problem people explain the unknown with god or a higher power. People also are uncomfortable with the fact that when you die there is nothing else. This is difficult for the mind to understand being it wants to explain everything and cannot fathom an end to thinking and life. Again, this makes people uncomfortable and so they tend to pacify this problem with the god factor and the concept of an afterlife
So, why is this a problem? This is a problem because it causes people to become closed-minded and full of hatred and bigotry. Religion often punishes the things that are not understandable by traditional means and often demeans women. This is because when most religions were created this was an acceptable form of society. Also religion was established to explain the unexplainable so naturally it will be harsh to the unexplainable and also it will gather an irrational explanation to things. A perfect example of this is the Christian religion and the bible.
Christianity teaches that women are responsible for the original sin and should be obedient to their husbands. It also advocates slavery, beating your slaves, and teaches that homosexuals are evil and an abomination to the human race. Christians often feel it is their Christian duty to spread their beliefs across the world and are often not tolerant of others’ beliefs and religions. This is practicing and teaching hatred and intolerance and is very dangerous.
Christianity is not the only religion that is dangerous. In fact, all religions are dangerous. In part two, I will discuss this and talk about other religions. I will also be discussing how religion is not needed in today’s time as well. Please be sure you look for part two next week.
